Before the house was purchased by the artist Jake Chapman, the original staircase had been removed and the garden sold for the construction of a flat-roofed storage building. He and his brother required two gallery spaces for showing their work, and that of contemporaries. These are located on the lower floors, where the vertical circulation has been reconfigured, before threading its way to the living space on the first floor and the sleeping cube at roof level. The use of black paint on the rear façade established a precedent for later projects.
